SIX LEVELS OF PAIN OF SEWING
As a final project in the foundations drawing class taught by Clara Lieu at the Rhode Island School of Design, this quilt serves as a response to the prompt "6 levels of pain". While others never strayed from the traditional charcoal drawing, Olivia chose to make a quilt. The squares were dyes with 6 levels of intensity of grey Procrion dye and it was backed with a soft cotton jersey in contrast to the pain shown on the front. Echoing palm reading charts, the 6 levels of pain of sewing were shown on a giant three and a half foot hand appliqué. The six levels of pain of sewing are as followed: thread everywhere, pin pricks, blister on the fingertip from hand sewing, seam ripper cut, rotary cutter cut, and finally a machine needle through the thumb. The irony about this quilt is that Olivia actually did sew through my finger for the first time while making it.
